Retaining Wall Installation That Holds Slopes and Adds Flat Yard Space

Building Walls on Northeast Georgia Hills for Homes and Businesses

Our retaining wall installation holds back soil on a slope so you gain flat, usable ground. A good wall keeps a bank from creeping into your yard or driveway. We build block walls on a packed stone base with drain stone behind them. That hidden work is what keeps a wall from leaning over time.

Weather Tech Roofing is based in Elberton. We build walls for homes and businesses in Hartwell, Royston and Washington. We work across Northeast Georgia, from small yards to sloped commercial lots. Our standard is simple: do the work right the first time.

What's Included

What Goes Into Our Block Retaining Walls

Most of a retaining wall's strength sits below ground and behind the face. We dig a trench, pack a stone base and bury the first row of block. Behind the wall, drain stone and a pipe give water a way out. Sloped lots are common across Northeast Georgia, and a well-built wall turns them into usable space.

Why a Well-Drained Wall Stands Up Longer

Less Water Pushing on the Wall

Wet soil is heavy, and it pushes hard on the back of a wall. Drain stone and pipe give that water a way out. Less pressure means less chance of bulging, leaning or cracking.

Packing the Backfill in Thin Layers

As the wall rises, we fill behind it a few inches at a time. Each layer gets packed before the next one goes in. Loose fill settles later and can pull the wall out of line. Filter fabric keeps dirt from clogging the drain stone.

Marking Buried Lines Before the Trench

Buried utility lines get marked through Georgia 811 before the base trench is dug. The marking is free.

Slopes, Driveways and Yards Where Landscape Walls Help

Many yards here slope toward the house or drop off sharply in back. A wall lets us cut that slope into a flat patio, lawn or play area. Driveways cut into a hill often need a wall to keep the bank from sliding down. Low garden walls and raised beds add shape to flat yards too. Retaining walls are part of the landscaping work our team does.

Wall height changes the whole job. Low garden walls need a solid base and drain stone. Walls over about 4 feet tall usually need an engineer's design. So do walls holding up a driveway or building. Terraces, or stepped walls, need the upper wall set well back from the lower one.

  • Backyards that slope down toward the house or foundation
  • Driveway cuts where the bank keeps sliding onto the gravel
  • Steep slopes split into two or more shorter terraced walls
  • Raised beds and seat walls around a paver patio

How tall can a retaining wall be without an engineer?

Walls up to about 4 feet tall are often built without an engineered plan. Taller walls, or walls holding up a driveway, building or deck, usually need one. Weak soil or a steep slope below the wall can lower that limit.

Why does a retaining wall need gravel behind it?

Gravel behind a wall lets water drain out instead of building up. Wet soil pushes hard on the block, and drain stone takes away that push. A pipe at the bottom carries the water out past the wall.

How deep is the first row of a block retaining wall buried?

At least half of the first row of block goes below ground on most walls. Taller walls may need one or two full rows buried. The buried row helps keep the base from kicking out.

What makes a retaining wall lean or fall over?

Trapped water and a weak base are the most common causes. Without drain stone, soaked soil pushes the wall forward. A base that was not packed well can settle and tip the block.

Can a retaining wall make a sloped yard flat?

Yes, a wall can turn part of a slope into level ground. We build the wall, then fill and pack soil behind it to make a flat area. Tall slopes often work better as two shorter walls in steps.
