Sod Installation for an Instant Lawn on New or Bare Ground

Laying New Lawns for Homes and Businesses in Northeast Georgia

Our sod installation gives you a full, covered lawn the day we finish. Sod is farm-grown grass cut into strips with the roots and soil attached. Because it covers bare dirt, you get less mud and fewer washouts right away. We prep the ground first, because sod roots best in loose, level soil.

Weather Tech Roofing is based in Elberton. We lay sod for homes and businesses in Watkinsville, Colbert and Comer. We work all over Northeast Georgia, often right after grading or a new build. Our team can shape the ground and lay the lawn as one job.

What's Included

Soil Prep and Sod Laying, Step by Step

Ground prep is where a lasting lawn starts. We clear rocks and debris, grade the yard to drain and loosen packed soil. Fresh sod right after grading covers bare Northeast Georgia ground faster than seed. Then each strip goes down tight and gets rolled flat.

What a New Sod Lawn Does for Your Property

Bare Dirt Covered the Same Day

Sod covers the soil as soon as it goes down. That cuts down on mud tracked inside and soil washing off in storms. You get a finished look without waiting weeks for seed to fill in. For big or steep areas, Weather Tech Roofing also offers hydroseeding.

Tight Seams and Good Soil Contact

Each strip butts tight against the next, with seams staggered like brick. We roll the lawn to press the roots into the soil and push out air pockets. Gaps and air pockets dry out fast, so this step helps the sod take root.

The First 30 Days of Watering

Georgia lets you water new sod at any hour for 30 days after it goes in. Keep the soil under the sod moist in that time. After that, about 1 inch of water a week is plenty.

Sun, Shade and New Construction Yards We Sod

New construction lots often need sod first. Builders often leave packed clay, so we loosen and level it first. Older lawns full of weeds or bare patches can be stripped and resodded. Commercial sites use sod to finish grounds fast and hold soil around new buildings.

Sun and shade decide which grass fits. Bermuda grows fast in full sun but does poorly in shade. Zoysia handles some shade, and centipede grows well in sun with light shade. We match the sod to how much sun each part of your yard gets.

  • New home lots left with packed, bare clay after building
  • Sunny backyards where a fast, tough Bermuda lawn fits
  • Partly shaded front yards suited to zoysia sod
  • Graded slopes and swales that need cover before the next storm

When is the best time to lay sod in Georgia?

May through August is the best time to lay warm-season sod in Georgia. April and September can work too. Warm-season sod laid in cold months roots slowly and needs extra care.

What kind of sod grows in shade?

Zoysia is the usual pick for a yard with some shade. Centipede handles light shade, while Bermuda needs full sun. Deep shade is hard on any grass, so planting beds may fit better there.

How long should you water new sod?

Keep the soil under new sod moist for the first 30 days. Georgia lets you water new turf at any time of day during that period. After that, about 1 inch of water a week is enough.

Can you lay sod directly on red clay?

Sod can grow on clay, but the clay needs to be loosened first. We till packed clay at least 3 to 4 inches deep and level it. Lime based on a soil test helps, since most Georgia soil is acidic.

Why do you roll sod after laying it?

Rolling presses the sod roots into the soil below. It also pushes out air pockets that would dry the roots. Good contact helps the new lawn root faster.
