Stump Grinding That Clears the Way for Mowing and Planting

Grinding Old Stumps Down Across Northeast Georgia

Stump grinding chews an old tree stump into chips, down below the ground. A grinder typically cuts the stump and big surface roots 8 to 12 inches deep. That leaves a spot you can mow over, plant or cover with sod. No more tripping, mower damage or steering around stumps.

Weather Tech Roofing added stump grinding in 2023, and we work from our base in Elberton. We grind stumps in Royston, Comer and Danielsville. Yards, pastures and lots across Northeast Georgia are on our list too. We also clear land and lay sod. One team can take the job from stump to grass.

How Grinding Out Stumps Makes Your Yard Usable Again

Safer Mowing and Walking

Stumps hide in tall grass and catch mower decks and ankles. Grinding them below ground takes that hazard off the surface. Kids, pets and equipment can cross the yard freely.

Marking Lines Before the Grinder Starts

Grinder teeth cut into the soil around a stump, where pipes and cables sometimes run. Georgia 811 marks buried utility lines for free before ground is broken. Irrigation lines and pet fences are private, so point those out too.

Top Off the Hole as the Fill Settles

Loose fill in a stump hole sinks as rain packs it down. Add topsoil to bring the spot level again before you seed or lay sod.

Yard, Pasture and Lot Stumps We Grind Out

A common job is one or two stumps left after a tree came down. Some are rows of stumps along a fence line or driveway. On acreage and pasture, old stumps block mowers and tractors. Business owners want stumps gone from lawns, parking edges and building sites. As a grading and landscaping team, we also handle land clearing for larger lots.

A big stump with wide roots takes longer than a small one. Stumps close to a house, slab or fence need careful grinding at the edges. A fresh stump is solid wood, while an old one may be soft with rot. Rocks or buried wire near the stump also slow the work down.

How deep does a stump grinder go?

A stump grinder typically cuts 8 to 12 inches below ground. That is deep enough to mow, lay sod or plant grass over the spot.

What is the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?

Stump grinding cuts the stump into chips where it sits. Stump removal pulls out the whole root ball. Grinding leaves a smaller hole and less torn-up yard. The deep roots stay in the ground and slowly break down.

Should I leave the wood chips in the hole after a stump is ground?

It is better to clear most of the chips before you plant or lay sod. Chips change how soil holds water and nutrients, so fresh topsoil grows grass better. Leftover chips work well as mulch in flower beds.

Will roots grow back after a stump is ground down?

Most ground stumps stay dead, but a tree that was still alive can send up sprouts. Cut the sprouts back as they appear, and they fade over time.

Can I let an old tree stump rot away on its own?

You can, but a stump can take 10 years or more to rot on its own. In that time it blocks mowing and can feed termites near the house. Grinding clears the spot right away.
