Shingle Roofing Nailed and Sealed to Stay Put in Coastal Wind

New Roofs for Gulf Coast Homes, Townhomes and Offices

Shingle roofing covers a sloped roof with overlapping rows that shed rain off your building. We install new shingle roofs and replace worn ones on homes and commercial buildings. Many homes get architectural shingles, which are layers bonded together for a thicker look. Three-tab shingles are a single flat layer cut into three tabs.

Our main storefront is in Pensacola. We also roof homes in Milton, Pace and Cantonment. Our work covers Northwest Florida and Coastal Alabama. Weather Tech Roofing is a GAF Certified Weather Stopper Roofing Contractor. We are also a TAMKO Pro Certified Contractor.

What's Included

What Our Architectural Shingle Roof Installation Includes

A shingle roof works when each layer sheds water onto the one below it. We build up from the deck through underlayment, flashing and shingles. Each shingle gets nailed where the maker's pattern calls for it. Shingles on a Gulf Coast roof need to handle heat, wind and salt air for years.

How a Well-Nailed Shingle Roof Resists Wind and Rain

A Strong Seal Between Each Shingle Row

Each shingle has a sealant strip. Once the sun warms it, the strip bonds to the row below. That bond, plus nails in the right spots, keeps shingles flat in high wind. Class H is the top class in the ASTM D7158 shingle wind test.

Building Valleys That Carry Heavy Rain

A valley is the channel where two roof slopes meet, so it carries extra water. We line each valley with underlayment before any shingles go on. Then we finish it with exposed metal or with shingles cut in a clean, straight line. Open metal valleys work well with thick architectural shingles and lower-pitch valleys.

Keep Valleys Clear of Leaves and Pine Straw

Valleys collect leaves and pine straw that hold water against the shingles. Clearing them in the fall and after storms helps the valley drain.

Shingle Roofs for Homes, Townhome Communities and Office Buildings

We install shingle roofs on single-family homes, both new builds and replacements. Townhome communities get shingles across several connected roofs, so rows and colors need to line up. Office buildings with sloped roofs take shingles too. Some homes pair shingles with a metal porch roof, and that joint needs careful flashing. Our local roofers plan each shingle roof for coastal heat and storms.

Roof pitch changes how we lay the shingles. Pitch is how steep the roof is. On lower pitches, water drains slower and wind can push rain up under the rows. Below 4 inches of rise per foot, we add extra underlayment. That means a double layer or a self-sticking sheet.

Shingle Roof Contractor Answers for Gulf Coast Homeowners

Here are plain answers on nails, SBS shingles, sealing, algae cleaning and shingle weight.

Why should an asphalt shingle roof be nailed instead of stapled?

Nails hold shingles far better than staples when strong wind pulls on them. FEMA's coastal building guide calls for nails, not staples, in high-wind areas. The nails should be long enough to pass through the roof deck.

What are SBS modified shingles?

SBS modified shingles have rubber-like polymers mixed into the asphalt. FEMA notes they resist tabs tearing off better in high wind.

Why are my new shingles not lying flat yet?

New shingles can look a bit loose until the sun warms their sealant strips. Once heated, the strips bond each shingle to the row below. Not sealed after a few warm, sunny weeks? Have the roof checked.

How do you clean algae off a shingle roof?

Algae comes off best with a mild bleach and water mix applied gently. Skip the pressure washer and stiff brushes, since they can damage shingles. Cleaning makes a roof very slippery, so the job is safer left to a pro.

Do architectural shingles weigh more than 3-tab shingles?

Yes, architectural shingles weigh more because they are built from several bonded layers. Three-tab shingles are a single layer, so they are lighter. The layers also give them a deeper look, a bit like slate or wood shake.
