Siding Replacement That Fixes What the Old Siding Was Hiding

Re-Siding Houses Across the Alabama and Florida Gulf Coast

Our siding replacement service swaps worn or damaged siding for new vinyl or fiber cement. We take the old siding off so we can see the wall behind it. Soft wood, torn wrap and failed flashing get fixed before anything new goes up. The new siding then goes on over a wall that is sound underneath.

Our main storefront is in Pensacola. We replace siding on homes in Navarre, Fort Walton Beach and Pace. Our work reaches across Northwest Florida and Coastal Alabama too. Our team grew up on this coast and has seen what storms do to a house.

Is your siding cracked, faded or loose in more than a few spots? Call us or send a request to talk about replacing it. We keep you posted on what we find, from first visit to final trim.

What's Included

What Re-Siding Your Home Covers, On the Wall and Behind It

Replacing siding starts with taking things off the wall. Gutters, downspouts and light fixtures come down first, then the old siding. We nail down loose sheathing and swap out any rotten boards. On the Gulf Coast, re-siding also means a fresh water barrier behind the new panels.

Why a Full Tear-Off Pays Off When You Replace House Siding

A Chance to Step Up to Wind-Rated Siding

Replacing siding is a prime time to move up to products that meet newer codes. High-wind vinyl is thicker and has a stronger nailing strip along the top. That strip is called the nail hem, and on these panels it is doubled or rolled. Fiber cement is another step up, since it stands up to wind-blown debris.

Choosing Tear-Off or Overlay

New vinyl can go over old siding only if the wood under it is sound. If boards are rotten, the old siding has to come off. Uneven walls get furring strips, thin boards that make a flat base. Fiber cement goes over studs or solid sheathing, so old siding usually comes off first.

Keep Soil and Water Off the Bottom Row

After the job, keep the ground sloping away from your walls. Pull mulch and soil back so the bottom row of siding never sits in standing water.

Worn, Rotted and Outdated Siding We Replace on Older Homes

We replace siding that has cracked, warped, faded or come loose in many places. Older homes may have wood siding with soft spots or paint that keeps peeling. Some walls hide leaks from flashing that failed years ago. Taking the siding off lets us fix that cause along with the surface. Our Gulf Coast roofing team can also fix flashing where a roof meets the wall.

Some older homes need extra steps before a siding replacement contractor starts. Siding that contains asbestos is regulated. The local environmental agency or building official should be called before it is removed or covered. Homes in historic districts may need review board approval for new siding. Some of those boards limit vinyl on historic buildings.

  • Faded, brittle vinyl that cracks when it gets bumped
  • Wood siding with soft spots, rot or paint that keeps peeling
  • Walls where old siding hid rotted sheathing or failed flashing
  • Storm-damaged siding spread across too many walls to patch

FAQs

Questions About Re-Siding an Older House

Here are answers on hidden rot, gutters, window leaks, materials and switching from vinyl.

What happens to rotted wood found behind old siding?

Rotten sheathing gets cut out and replaced with sound wood before new siding goes on. New vinyl should never be hung over rotting wood. Loose boards that are still sound get nailed back down.

Do gutters and lights come off when siding is replaced?

Yes, gutters, downspouts and wall lights come down so the new siding can go behind them. They go back up once the siding and trim are in place.

Does replacing siding fix leaks around windows?

It can fix leaks that start at the edges of a window or door. Old caulk gets scraped out and the openings get new flashing before siding goes back on. A leak through the window unit itself needs a window repair.

Is vinyl or fiber cement better for new siding replacement near the coast?

Both work near the coast when the product is rated for the wind and installed correctly. Vinyl is lighter and never needs paint. Fiber cement is heavier, resists wind-blown debris and needs paint over time.

Can I replace vinyl siding with fiber cement?

Yes, worn vinyl can be swapped for fiber cement planks. The vinyl trim and channels come off too. New trim goes up for the planks. Fiber cement then gets paint unless it comes with a factory finish.
